A Simple Guide for Holi, Schools & Color Runs

This is the question I get asked every year by moms, PTAs, universities, and event organizers: “How much color powder do we actually need?” I’ve planned Holi at home, helped events, schools and campuses across the U.S., and learned this the practical way. You don’t need to overthink it.

The Rule of Thumb (This Is the One to Remember)

Plan for ~300 – 400 grams of color powder per person for Holi-style celebrations This amount: If you remember just one number, remember 300 – 400 grams per person. This is also why we offer our Holi colors in grams and bulk sizes—so it’s easy to plan without overbuying.

Home Holi & Small Group Celebrations

Perfect for backyards, neighborhoods, or a few families getting together. Real-life mom tip: Kids usually use more powder than adults, and they care more about having multiple colors. They can bathe themselves in powder 🙂

Larger Family & Community Holi

If your celebration includes: Stay closer to 350 g per person rather than cutting back.

Schools, PTAs & Universities

For school and campus events, color is often shared—not continuous free play. A simple planning guide: If students receive individual packets, plan closer to 250–300 g per person. If color is shared through stations or group tosses, you can get away with 250 g per person.

Color Runs & Fun Runs (Different Use Case)

Color runs use powder in controlled moments, not free play. Plan for ~150 grams (≈ 0.33 lb) per participant Examples: This allows for multiple color stations without overwhelming runners or volunteers.

The Easiest Way to Calculate

Just multiply: Number of people × grams per person Examples: For Safety – add a few hundred grams or a few lbs.

One Thing I Always Tell Schools & Parents

Quantity matters: but what the powder is made of matters just as much. Look for powder that is: Especially for schools and universities, this is non-negotiable.

 Final Thought

Every Holi, every school event, every color run looks a little different, and that’s okay. Start with 300 grams per person, adjust based on how interactive your event will be, and plan for joy, not excess. And if you’re ever unsure, just reach out.
